An Autonomous


Civil Engineering department is the first department which started along with the inception of the college in 1958 with an intake of 60. Department was centrally aided since 1958 and it became State Govt. aided since 1966. In the Year 2014 the UG intake of the department is enhanced to 180. PG courses in environmental and structural engineering were started in 1982 and 1987 respectively. Department was recognized as research center by VTU in the Year 2000. It has also been given autonomous status since 2007. Department has been accredited by NBA twice, once in 2005 and second time in 2009. Now the department is applying for NBA as per Washington Accord. Four research scholars have been awarded with doctoral degree and 15 research scholars are pursuing their doctoral degree. Department has got qualified and dedicated team of faculty and staff members. All the laboratories are equipped with state of the art equipments. Department has organized number of workshops, training programmes sponsored by AICTE, ISTE, VTU, TEQIP and ministry of home affairs. In addition to the academic and research activity the department is also serving the society by carrying out consultancy work and specialized training programmes to the people involved in the construction industry. The department is identified as State Technical Agency for PMGSY project in Karnataka State and is actively involved in the third party inspection works of roads, buildings, water supply and sanitary works entrusted by district administrations. Department has got separate training and placement cell. Department has MOUs with several Industries and it has got a giant consultancy cell fetching about Rs.2 lakhs per month.

Departmental Library and Reading Room:

No. of volumes available in the departmental library are 600. Attached to departmental library, there is one reading room facility for the faculty and students.

Audio Visual seminar room:

Department has got LCD projector along with smart board installed in the seminar room.


Computing Facility:

Total number of P4 computers for UG students provided in the CAD Lab is 33 and additional ten numbers of advanced computers are provided for the PG students.




7 faculty possess doctoral degree and 8 faculty have registered for their Ph.D out of which one member has submitted the thesis and all others are postgraduates.
National Rural Road Development Authority has identified department as State Technical Agency for PMGSY projects and Dr.S.S.Awanti heads the center and Prof.S.N.Munnur, Dr.S.G.Patil and Prof.Amaresh Patil are the members. Also Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi, has identified the Department as State Resource Institute for training Govt. and Private Engineers in earthquake risk management. Prof.A.B.Harwalkar, Prof.Shivaraj Mangalgi and Prof.Amaresh Patil are acting as resource persons for the SRI.

Dr. S. S. Awanti visited Athens, Greece and Hongkong for presenting technical papers. Dr.M.N.Dandigi worked as Asst.Prof. in Arbaminch University Arbaminch – Ethiopia for 2 years and also participated in the invited training programme at Netherlands and presented a paper at Malysia. Dr.S.S.Awanti and Prof.A.B.Harwalkar have completed an AICTE funded R&D project with a grant of Rs.8lakhs. Dr.S.G.Patil is the Principal Investigator for a R&D project sponsored by VGST Bangalore with a grant of Rs.20lakhs and also for another R&D project sponsored by ALSTHOm India Ltd. Shahabad with a grant of Rs.0.7lakhs. Dr.S.R.Mise completed an AICTE sponsored R&D project with a grant of Rs.14lakhs. Dr.S.S.Awanti and Dr.R.S.Harssor conducted an International Conference on Recent Innovation in Civil Engineering. Four short term training were conducted to give training to faculty of other Engg and diploma Colleges and one short term training programme was conducted for Govt. and private Engineers in earthquake safe construction.


Till today nearly 180 students have completed their PG in structural and Environmental Engineering. Each postgraduate student has got one publication in the Journal/conference. 10 Research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D. from the Research Center established in the Department. Four research scholars from the Research Center have been awarded doctoral degree. Several final year student projects are funded by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST). One KSCST funded student UG project under the guidance Sri.A.B.Harwalkar receieved the award of “Best Project of the Year” in the State level exhibition organized by KSCST. Er. Chandrashekhar, one of our Alumni, who worked under the guidance of Dr.S.S.Awanti, presented a technical paper at Scotland.
Students participated in different competitions conducted by other institutes such as BLDE Engg College, Bijapur and BMS Engg College, Bangalore and won the prizes. Students won the Regional level quiz competition “STIMULUS” organized by Ultratech Cements for three years i.e., in 2007, 2010 and 2012 and selected for state level competition. Students are performing well in the examination. The final semester result was more than 90%.

Department Association Details:

Civil Engg Association has been established with the student participation. Every year the association activity will be inaugurated with Fresher Meet by eminent persons in the civil engineering field. The association has got the library facility having more than 600 volumes of books to cater to the needs of the students. Civil Engineering association organizes and conducts various program and activities for overall development of students. Students have been encouraged to send the technical papers to the student conferences / competitions and the department faculty has been providing necessary guidance. Visits for students to various construction and project sites are arranged so as to give them the exposure to the site-operations. Last year two guest lectures from the industry people have been arranged. CEA conducts sports meet annually and winners are felicitated with prizes. Also best outgoing student who excels in all the departments is awarded in the valedictory function of the association each year.
