An Autonomous

The department of Ceramic & Cement Technology was started in the year 1982, with an intake capacity of 30 students under the headship of a renowned Professor in the field of Ceramics, late Dr. M.D. Narashimhan, a student of Dr. W.D. Kingery, who earlier worked as Reader in MIT, USA and as a Professor at Ceramic Engineering Department, IIT, Varanasi. PDA College of Engineering, Gulbarga is the first to start this course in South India and has established its identity as an attractive course due to high success rate in students’ placement since its inception. The Department has a building of its own with sufficient laboratory, research and library facilities. During the year 2005, this was the only department in the institution to get NBA accreditation for 5 years, for excellence in teaching-learning methodology, industry oriented project works and highly active faculty and staff in research. Most of the teachers have upgraded their higher qualification from premier institutes of the country such as IISc, IIT, and NIT and have published research papers in peer reviewed journals of high impact factor. About 80% of teaching staff of this department are Ph.D holders. The current intake of the department is 40 at the first year level.

During 2012, this department was recognized as Research Centre by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, Karnataka. A post graduate programme on Materials Science and Technology is started by the department from this academic year 2014-2015. This M.Tech. course is an interdisciplinary one, open to students from mechanical and chemical sciences. The department has sponsored projects from VTU and AICTE.

Most of our alumni are employed in reputed organizations such as ACC, TRL, H&R Johnson, Saint Gobain, BHEL, NMRL, NAL etc. Few of them have pursued higher studies from foreign Universities such as Alfred, Illinois, Sheffield, Tokyo Institute of Technology etc.

The department regularly conducts conferences, seminars, workshops and invited lectures for the benefit of students, research scholars and for the industry in the locality. An international seminar organized by the department on ‘Frontiers of Ceramic and Material Technologies for Cement Industries’  in collaboration with Indian Ceramic Society, Bangalore Chapter on 17th and 18th Nov 2014, with speakers from France, United Kingdom, Malaysia and Nepal received high commendation in the region.

The department is currently headed by Prof. Dr. John U. Kennedy
